Midland Quarry Products has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard in recognition for measuring, managing and reducing its carbon emissions. This achievement reinforces the company’s policy commitment to putting sustainable solutions at the heart of all its business decisions.
The standard has been achieved by all the operations, which includes 2 Quarries, 6 Asphalt plants and the Head Office in Leicestershire.
The company strives to develop new products/facilities to continuously reduce energy usage and hence the carbon footprint of the business and that of its customers. One of the most important breakthroughs has been the development of Low Energy Asphalt, which has successfully been supplied onto the network with significant carbon savings.
MQP uses Smart half hour metering and custom built software to monitor and track fuel, gas, water and electricity and produce all data and energy usage. This ensures tractability and evidence of supply and usage across all company operations.
Appointed Energy Champions are tasked with channeling the ideas of the workforce into real solutions to reduce energy. Many ideas have already been put in place such as; carbon reducing asphalt burner ignition systems, the replacement of heavy plant at Cliffe Hill (dumpers and shovels) have with energy efficient machines with all operators having attended eco driving training to learn about engine management systems and auto tyre pressure monitoring.
All units are set targets and objectives to reduce year on year energy consumption which is targeted through unit, dept and individual KPI’s
Managing Director Simon Willis commented on achieving the Standard
“I am proud of the hard work and effort put in by all employees to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard. I am sure that working together we will continue to achieve further improvements/reductions in energy use.”
