Whitwick Quarry has been operational for over 100 years, it celebrated its centenary in 1993.
When Midland Quarry Products was formed in December 1996, quarrying operation were suspended with operations being rationalised and concentrated at the Cliffe Hill site. Only the coating plant and weighbridge facilities are now in use, although the company head office is also situated on the site.
The stone from Whitwick quarry is a porphoritic dacite, which is part of the granite family. The stone being over 600 million years old.
The coating plant at Whitwick is an Italian Marini asphalt plant, which produces a range of coated macadams, hot rolled asphalts and other specialist materials (see product catalogue).
Quarrying first started on the site at the old Forest Rock Quarry. This area's restoration was completed in the spring of 1997. A number of walks and a central area have been completed in conjunction with the National Forest. In all, over 20,000 trees were planted in this part of the site, with management and aftercare work being carried out periodically.
The quarry is accredited to ISO 9001 Quality Management and BS EN 14001 Environmental Management. It is a member of the QPA Good Neighbour Scheme and supports many local community projects.
The quarry pays particular attention to reducing the environmental impact of its operations on the surrounding area, in particular through the Quarry Liaison Committee. The committee meets on a 3 monthly basis to discuss and resolve any issues which may arise regarding the quarry. It is made up of representatives from the company, local villages and local councils.
