Nathan Hammond - Asphalt Production Supervisor

I joined MQP on the Advanced Modern Apprenticeship Scheme, based at Cliffe Hill Quarry in September 2002. I attended Leicestershire Engineering Training Group (L.E.T.G) on a month on month off basis between the college and work to complete NVQ 2 is basic engineering.

I then attended Leicester College at Abbey Park and successfully completed the BTEC National Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering. During this time I had joined the Electrical Department at Cliffe Hill working within the team and gaining experience along with gaining NVQ 3 in Maintenance Engineering.

After completing my Apprenticeship I attended Leicester College and completed successfully the HNC in Electrical/Electronic Engineering. At this point I had moved over to the Fitting Department of the Engineering team to gain experience on that side for 18 months.

After moving back over to the electrical department I began my HND in Electrical/Electronic Engineering. After this 1 year course I moved on to Derby University and started the D.A.P.S course, (Diploma in Quarry Technology). By Aug 2010 I had successfully completed that 3 year course. At this point I was drafted in as part of a team attending 3 days of work learning about reducing our carbon footprint within the company and integrating that into the company.

I then went on to run the carbon and energy reduction processes at Cliffe Hill locating and making energy savings where possible along with providing cover as an electrician when required or requested to do so.

I then moved into the position of Asphalt Production Supervisor, working at Cliffe Hill for 3 years to gain valuable experience, I was then given the exciting opportunity to become the Asphalt Unit Supervisor for our Asphalt Plants at Northampton and Groby in January 2015. This gave me experience in budget control, maintenance planning and the day to day production of a busy collect plant whilst maintaining and improving health and safety standards.

I was the unit supervisor at Northampton and Groby for 2 years before moving back to Cliffe Hill in April 2017 to be the Asphalt Production Manager for the Marini and Quad asphalt plants and also managing a busy and demanding recycling area producing RAP.

I have since completed my D.A.P.S in Asphalt technology to go alongside the Quarry technology and also successfully achieving my NEBOSH certificate in health and safety & WAMITAB certificate in waste management.

Training is ongoing for me - I am due to start an NVQ level 4 in Health and Safety and am always keen to do any other training available.

I enjoy my role within the company, it is different to what I used to do, gains me valuable experience and adds to the knowledge I possess about the company.

The team I work with are brilliant. MQP has provided me with the opportunity to gain my Apprenticeship, be a member of the electrical maintenance department, develop into a Supervisory role and now into a Management position in a highly successful part of the business having been provided with training, help and guidance along the way to achieve this.

I feel I owe a great deal of thanks for my success to all persons that I have worked with at MQP who have passed on their knowledge and expertise over the years. This has resulted in me feeling like a valuable part of the team.

I enjoy working for MQP as there are different challenges every day, the people I work with are good people and work together as a team to get the job done. I feel a sense of achievement at the end of each day knowing I have done my best.

MQP have shown a lot of faith in me encouraging me further to achieve more.
